si mohiNi and SHO vijendra

Social media and its impact on teenage girls are significant concerns nowadays because girls face cybercrime, harassment, and cyberbullying through it. When these case increase Delhi Police has established 15 cyber police stations in each district in the national capital to combat and mitigate with cybercrimes. Therefore, we discussed with SI Mohini Rao and SHO Vijendra Yadav, who are posted in a cyber police station, about the types of cases related to teenage girls that are being reported.

Payal: Ma'am, given your gender and expertise in this department, could you outline the common types of cases you handle and the trends observed in cases involving girls?

SI Mohini Rao: It's crucial to recognize that this age group straddles the line between childhood and young adulthood, often lacking the same level of maturity or understanding of right and wrong.

When girls use social media, they may not fully grasp the consequences of their actions, sometimes seeking attention or believing they're anonymous. However, they face significant risks, especially cyber defamation when their identities are exposed.

Feeling scrutinized in school or other settings, they may withdraw, leading to loneliness and detachment from family and friends. This isolation can also manifest in increased aggression and irritability.

Q : Regarding social media harassment or cyberbullying, what progress has been made, and are there emerging trends in these cases?

Ans : While progress is evident, a concerning trend is the rise of girl-to-girl harassment. Former friends, often from the same class or without prior communication, engage in harassment out of frustration.

Additionally, we've observed cases of money fraud through social media, although they are fewer in number. Culprits may exploit teenage girls knowing they receive lesser punishment.

Q : Do you actively work on raising awareness about social media among children?

Ans : Absolutely. We conduct governance programs, visit schools, and utilize various methods such as presentations and workshops to educate children about responsible social media use. Parents and teachers also play a crucial role in monitoring and educating children about their social media activities.

Payal: Sir, given your concern about cybercrime, could you please share which apps teenagers primarily use nowadays and how their classes are affected?

SHO Vijendra Yadav: Well, Instagram is the most popular app among teenagers, and they also use others like Facebook. Regarding classes, students in 9th and 11th grades are most active, though issues are also common among 10th and 11th graders.

We often encounter situations where girls receive unknown requests or are stalked, prompting immediate complaints. In other cases, girls accept requests, leading to relationships and potential blackmail incidents.

Unfortunately, demands for money are common due to the widespread use of mobile phones. Additionally, dating apps pose risks as girls easily fall victim to deception.

It's crucial for teenagers and parents to understand these risks and promote responsible app and online usage.

Q : What types of cyber cases do you typically handle?

Ans : We handle various cyber-related cases, especially those involving teenagers, ranging from initial complaints to escalated situations.

Cybercrime has surged with the widespread availability of mobile phones and cheap internet, leading people to spend more time online and increasing crime rates.

Recognizing this trend, specialized cybercrime police stations were established to address the complexities of these cases.
